Le Château

Chateau Valcivieres

6 - 9 people

"LE CHATEAU' is a 19th century "castelet" abandoned as a ruin and for many years hidden by pine trees. In 1990 the forest was cleared and the ruin made accessible. Today, Léon and Janine welcome you to their 'pocket-sized' château completely renovated with extraordinary style and charm.

Surrounded by 3 hectares of farmland, the Chateau is south facing and boasts a panoramic view, 360 degrees, taking in the mountains of Valcivières to the East and the sunsets across the valley of the river Dore to the West.

The interior of the Chateau has been carefully renovated in keeping with the building's original ambiance and integrity – light, spacious rooms, high ceilings, classic tall French windows, exposed wood and oak and chestnut floorboards throughout.

You can enjoy your breakfast on the terrace leading from the kitchen with a view of the ancient village of Valcivières, and on cooler evenings enjoy the large sitting room and it's stone fireplace. Also on the ground floor is the main bedroom with an en-suite shower room. In the charming round tower, on three levels, are the two other bedrooms, another cosy sitting room with windows looking over the château roof and terrace.

Leaving the Chateau grounds, you can explore the region following well-worn stone footpaths – from the village of Valcivières all the way to the Col des Supeyres. There is extensive mountain walking, or cross country biking at the top of the mountains behind – the high country known as the Hautes Chaumes. In winter there are cross country ski paths, where you can admire the panorama of the volcanic mountains – la chaine des Puys, and on a particularly clear day look across to the Mont Blanc and the Alpes.

Shops and supermarkets are close by – Ambert 11 kms and a restaurant, the Auberge de Valcivières in the village.

Montouroux

Gite Valcivieres

11 - 13 people

Situated in the heart of Valcivieres, in the Monts du Forez, the gite Montouroux is surrounded by a rich and varied forest habitat. Close to the Col des Supeyres and the ancient tracks linking mountain huts and the jasserie - the Coq Noir – a museum, restaurant and festival venue all through the summer. This mountain gite can accommodate large groups and families, with spacious rooms furnished and decorated in traditional comfort and style.

Montoroux is an ancient farmhouse, barn, stable and cheese cellar that has been renovated with meticulous care and respect by Janine and Léon. Warm, natural timber makes up the most part of the interior and furnishings, though it is not the only raw material used. The roof is thatched, something typical, but these days rare, to the area. On the floor you will find traditional tiles (tomettes de Laschamps) and superb granit flagstones.

Also of note are the hand made terra cotta wall tiles, the old cheese cellar and the huge bread oven in the fireplace, where you can make your own bread or pizzas.

Shops and supermarkets are close by – Ambert 11 kms and a restaurant, the Auberge de Valcivières in the village.
